Walk and talk therapy
The combination of light exercise, contact with nature, and a therapeutic conversation all have a dynamic and positive effect on wellbeing. There are a number of physiological and psychological hypotheses that have been offered over the years to explain the intimate relationship between physical activity and mental health which include:
It is widely acknowledged that exercise enhances mental and physical health, less widely known are the powerful benefits which can be obtained when connecting the mind in thought and the body in action.
Therapy is an endlessly fascinating process and when it is going well, there’s an energy and flow of thoughts and ideas between client and therapist. For a variety of reasons however, some people are uncomfortable with ‘traditional therapy’ or there may be an impasse and therapy fails to move forward. During these times, I highly recommend walking therapy. My experience has indicated that the client is more able to manage their anxiety and therapy is allowed to move forward more effectively, when therapy is taken off the couch and out into the fresh air. The ‘walk and talk’ experience offers a new approach to life’s challenges and is a healthy and efficient alternative to in-office counseling. It is offered during daylight hours in peaceful, suitable locations within the western suburbs of Perth. Walking pace is adapted to suit your needs and is at all times secondary to the therapeutic conversation.
