Mindfulness practice be kind whenever possible, it is always possible

Counselling for Depression, Substance Abuse and Low Self-Esteem Mindfulness is the art and practice of living in the present moment, in an open, compassionate and accepting way. It has been practiced deliberately for over 2,500 years to alleviate human suffering, primarily in the form of mindfulness meditation. Mindfulness meditation has made its way into mainstream Western society and increasingly, people are adopting this simple route toward greater freedom and well-being even in the midst of pain, anxiety and depression.

Most of our thoughts tend to be preoccupied with either past or future events. For example, people who are depressed often feel regret, sadness or guilt about the past, and people who are anxious, often fear the future. During our waking hours we have on average, one thought every five seconds. Many of those thoughts are profoundly unhelpful and driven by anxiety, pain, distress and longing. Suffering seems to increase as we stray from the present moment and it is not surprising that we find it difficult to find a state of peace.

Mindfulness practice is a conscious attempt to return awareness more frequently to the present. As we do, we begin to recognise that even strong emotions don’t define us, that they are simply a passing parade of thoughts and feelings. With practice, awareness of thoughts and bodily sensations can help us to see things with a fresh perspective.
