Using art therapy to support teenagers

We do not inherit the earth from our fathers; we borrow it from our childrenCounselling for Depression, Substance Abuse and Low Self-Esteem, Art Therapy

This casual and enjoyable approach to therapy is highly effective with teenagers and children. Even the most well adjusted teenager can face overwhelming difficulties during this stage in their development. My goal is to encourage them to discover their strengths and learn to create their own solutions as they struggle to deal with issues such as -

bullying depression
low self-esteem stress and anxiety
substance misuse addiction
grief and loss anger
self-confidence

Adolescence can be lonely and isolating and often, difficult situations arise which can be too powerful, embarrassing or risky to reveal in words. This method allows them to express their opinions of the world, through imagery. The evocative power of the art materials assist in the process of expression. Expressing the pictures created in their mind stimulates their fascination and often encourages them to want to share those insights verbally. Please note that no artistic ability is necessary as the focus is on the creative process.

What are the advantages of using this method over counselling or psychotherapy?

The probability of the teenager remaining in therapy is increased. It provides a space to express their inner feelings in a non-threatening manner. It also offers a healthy escape from problems and avoids the cross-examination which is often expected in therapy.

When healthy coping mechanisms go into overload and fail, common reactions to combat the distress can be substance misuse, self-harm, sexual acting out, violent outbursts and generally creating chaos.

I have worked extensively with adolescents and find this method provides a non-threatening form of communication. It is a highly effective outlet for powerful feelings, regardless of the person’s limitations or struggles. It allows the release of emotions, assists in building self-esteem, self-respect, and helps them to achieve a healthy emotional balance.

School support services

I am available to work individually and to facilitate workshops in school environments. I have a positive team approach when working with teachers and school psychologists and can provide assistance for each child to experience a positive and successful school experience.
