Art therapy

Art is the meeting ground of the world inside and the world outside

Counselling for Depression, Substance Abuse and Low Self-Esteem Art therapy is an expressive method which integrates counselling techniques with the expressive and healing qualities of the creative process. The art image becomes significant in enhancing the verbal exchange and is particularly effective for those who:

It is the client who defines the proportion of verbal and non-verbal communication during these sessions and no art experience or talent is required.

The therapist’s role is to encourage the client’s creative expression, for example by drawing, painting or sculpture. When an image is created, the process of externalizing a thought or feeling provides a safe distancing from concerns and issues allowing them to be addressed. New perspectives are discovered and issues that may otherwise have been difficult to bring to the conscious mind are unblocked. By connecting our conscious with our unconscious we gain a more congruent sense of self.

Art therapy practice is as diverse as the creative approach of the therapist. It is absorbing, enjoyable and relaxing. It also allows clients to live in the ‘present moment’ rather than focusing on the difficulties of the past or the uncertainties of the future.

It is recognized as a highly effective psychotherapeutic technique, which helps to identify blocks to personal growth and happiness.
